Georgia Chief Judge Brenda Jennings Resigns After Directing Staff to Collect Rent for Her Personal Properties and Hiding the Income
Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published: February 07, 2025
Heard County Magistrate Court Chief Judge Brenda Jennings resigned effective immediately on February 5, 2025, after Georgia's Judicial Qualifications Commission opened an inquiry finding she violated five separate provisions of the state's Code of Judicial Conduct. The Commission's findings included that Jennings was habitually absent from court, misused court staff to run personal errands, engaged in improper ex parte communications, and instructed her staff to accept rental payments from tenants at properties she personally owned — income the investigation found she failed to properly report.
Governor Brian Kemp accepted Jennings' resignation the same day the JQC inquiry became public.
Directing government employees paid to run a courthouse to instead collect rent for a judge's private real estate, then not reporting that income, is a judge repurposing public resources and public trust for personal financial gain — not an isolated lapse in judgment, but five separate documented violations at once.
