Jeffrey M. Zimmerman, an Acting Justice of the Bronx County Supreme Court who had served as a New York City judge since 2018, interfered in the relationship between a criminal defendant and the defendant's own attorney while presiding over the case, according to a formal written complaint from the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct. The Commission found Zimmerman repeatedly disparaged the defense attorney in front of others and appeared to prejudge the defendant's guilt before the case was resolved.
In the same matter, Zimmerman spoke privately with the jury about a case it had just heard — a breach of the separation that's supposed to exist between a judge and jurors once their deliberations and the case itself are underway. Rather than contest the Commission's formal complaint, Zimmerman resigned effective April 3, 2025, and agreed to never seek or accept another judicial position in New York.
