Former Colorado judge censured over sexual misconduct
Colorado Politics
Published: April 24, 2023
Lance Timbreza, a Mesa County, Colorado District Court judge, was suspended with pay by the Colorado Supreme Court in June 2022 on a recommendation from the Colorado Commission on Judicial Discipline, and resigned that September while the case was pending. Timbreza and the Commission agreed he had violated multiple canons of the Colorado Code of Judicial Conduct — abusing his judicial office to advance personal interests, creating an appearance of impropriety, and engaging in sexual harassment — stemming from an encounter with a young attorney at a Colorado Bar Association conference that ended with the two of them at a hotel, where Timbreza made unwanted sexual propositions.
A special tribunal of the Colorado Supreme Court formally censured him for the conduct. This was not his first discipline: his record also includes a separate earlier censure and unpaid suspension for driving under the influence, and a private reprimand for delays in his judicial work.
