Moravia judge resigns after state investigates missing court funds
The Citizen (Auburn, NY)
Published: October 17, 2023
June Shepardson, a longtime Moravia town and village justice who had served since 2001, converted more than $6,000 in public court funds for her own use, according to a New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct investigation. She was suspended from the bench in July 2023 and resigned that August as the investigation proceeded. Shepardson was criminally charged and pleaded guilty in Cayuga County Court to fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony. As part of her plea agreement, she paid more than $6,000 in restitution — $6,173 to the Moravia town court and $153 to the village — before entering her plea, and was sentenced to five years of felony probation. Shepardson also agreed to complete treatment for a gambling addiction and to never seek public office again.
