Robin Baxter Sabio Suspended Removed

Mecklenburg County Magistrate Robin Baxter Sabio never finished the training required to serve in the role, completing only 21.25 of the required 27.75 hours and missing multiple sessions of the N.C. Basic School of Magistrates. Then-Chief District Court Judge Elizabeth Trosch found she "failed to demonstrate a minimum level of competence" in her duties and failed to maintain professional competence in the law. Sabio also failed to report for her scheduled shift on February 12, 2024, and every scheduled shift after that until February 29 — roughly two and a half weeks of no-shows. Most seriously, Trosch's findings noted that more than $2,000 in bond money went missing during two cases Sabio handled in Cabarrus County. Trosch suspended Sabio with pay on March 8, 2024. On April 29, Superior Court Judge Peter Knight ordered her formally removed from the magistrate position.
