Indiana Supreme Court suspends judge for marijuana use
The Indiana Lawyer
Published: May 21, 2026
John M. Plummer III, a Lawrence County, Indiana Superior Court judge, was suspended without pay for 60 days by the Indiana Supreme Court after being found to have committed judicial misconduct by using marijuana. The court found that between February and May 2025, Plummer consumed cannabis-infused gummies and vaped marijuana over a four-month period, which caused him to appear impaired and exhibit erratic, agitated behavior at a county council meeting. The Judicial Qualifications Commission's charges also accused Plummer of giving inconsistent information about his drug use during the investigation. In setting the length of the suspension, the court considered mitigating factors including Plummer's voluntary treatment and the absence of any prior disciplinary history. His suspension ran from May 21 to July 20, 2026, after which he was reinstated.
