Louis L. Nock, a New York City Civil Court judge who became an Acting Supreme Court Justice in 2018, faced formal ethics charges alleging he routinely treated court staff in a rude, demeaning, and unprofessional manner. More seriously, the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct found that Nock threatened to file attorney grievance complaints against Commission staff and witnesses in his own case, and threatened a criminal complaint against another witness — unless the ethics charges against him were dismissed. The Commission separately investigated whether Nock had impermissibly practiced law on the side while serving as a full-time, $250,000-a-year judge. Nock denied all the allegations. After the Commission twice denied his motions to have the charges thrown out, he agreed to resign, vacating his judicial office effective September 2, 2025, and pledging never to seek or accept judicial office again.
