New Lebanon town justice steps down amid investigation
Daily Gazette
Published: June 18, 2024
John "Jack" Nevers, a justice of the New Lebanon Town Court in Columbia County, New York, resigned effective May 30, 2024, days after the State Commission on Judicial Conduct notified him it was investigating complaints against him. The Commission's inquiry covered several allegations: that Nevers dismissed a traffic ticket issued to a relative of his co-judge, at her request; that he failed to disqualify himself from a separate case despite a longstanding friendship with the defendant and the defendant's family; and that he showed unpreparedness and caused unnecessary delay in handling an eviction matter, in part because he had been unable to fully perform his judicial duties since a medical emergency in late 2023. As part of his resignation agreement with the Commission, Nevers agreed to never seek or accept judicial office in the future.
