William Ross Mitchell, the Uvalde County, Texas Judge for nearly 40 years, was suspended without pay by the State Commission on Judicial Conduct in November 2025 after being indicted on a charge of official oppression, a Class A misdemeanor. According to the indictment, handed up by a grand jury of the 38th Judicial District Court, Mitchell is accused of ordering the unlawful arrest of Tyler Cox, a UPS driver delivering packages to the Uvalde County Courthouse on March 27, 2025. Cox has alleged that Mitchell began shouting at him and seized a dolly from him, and after Cox continued carrying packages upstairs, Mitchell ordered a Uvalde County sheriff's deputy to arrest him — the indictment alleges Mitchell knowingly subjected Cox to an unlawful arrest, detention, or seizure while acting as a public servant. Mitchell intended to appeal the suspension and told reporters he planned to retire at the end of his term in December 2026. But, he died on April 10, 2026.
