Louisiana Justice of the Peace Mark Miley Admits Hearing Eviction Cases Outside His Own Court's Jurisdiction
Judiciary Commission of Louisiana
Published: February 09, 2026
Mark Miley, Justice of the Peace for Ward 3, District 1 in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, signed a Deferred Recommendation of Discipline Agreement with the state Judiciary Commission after a formal hearing notice alleged violations of the Code of Judicial Conduct and the Louisiana Constitution. Miley admitted his conduct violated six separate provisions of the Code, stemming from hearing eviction cases involving properties that fell outside his own court's jurisdictional boundaries. Under the three-year agreement, effective February 6, 2026, Miley must now notify anyone filing an eviction petition in his court of their obligation to confirm the property is actually located within Ward 3, District 1; if he later determines a property falls outside that jurisdiction, the case must be dismissed without refunding the filing costs. If Miley violates the terms of the agreement, he has consented to a public censure by the Louisiana Supreme Court.
