Florida Judge Mardi Levey Cohen Disguised an IRS Complaint to Look Like It Came From the IRS Itself — Sent to a Church That Hosted Her Election Opponent
The Florida Bar News
Published: May 09, 2025
Broward County Judge Mardi Levey Cohen filed a real complaint with the IRS challenging the tax-exempt status of a Lauderhill church — because the church had hosted a campaign event for her 2022 re-election opponent. She then mailed a copy of that complaint directly to the church, altering the return address to make it appear the letter had come from the IRS itself, rather than from her. Levey Cohen separately admitted to spreading unverified claims that her opponent, attorney Kaysia Earley, was "a fraud" — information she conceded she hadn't verified before putting it into her campaign. Florida's Supreme Court suspended Levey Cohen for 10 days without pay and publicly reprimanded her for the campaign misconduct. She resigned effective December 31, 2025, ending a 15-year judicial career.
