Shelby County Criminal Court Judge James Jones Jr. -- who later presided over the Tyre Nichols trial -- wrote letters on Shelby County Criminal Court letterhead asking a Florida court to "show mercy in its sentencing" of two people convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, describing them as friends of his and his wife. He signed the letters "Hon. James Jones, Jr." and identified himself by his judicial title. Tennessee's Board of Judicial Conduct found this violated the explicit rule barring judges from providing character references in legal proceedings -- Jones had "lent the prestige of judicial office for the personal benefit of others." The Board also noted that Jones's own wife was herself a co-defendant alongside the two people in a related civil proceeding, a direct personal stake in the case's outcome that went unmentioned in his letters. Jones admitted writing the letters and apologized, though he later said he had written them at the request of the defendants' own lawyers and wasn't fully aware of the extent of their case. The Board issued him a public reprimand.
