Tennessee Judge Jason Holly Left His Own Court Without a Judge After His Law License Was Suspended
WJHL
Published: November 05, 2024
Jason Holly, the Elizabethton, Tennessee Municipal Court judge, had his law license temporarily suspended on October 28, 2024, after Tennessee's Board of Professional Responsibility found he failed to respond to three separate misconduct complaints involving legal services to clients in his private law practice. Earlier that year, Holly had also been unable to sit on the bench because he had fallen behind on his required continuing legal education hours. With Holly freshly re-elected but still lacking a valid law license, Elizabethton Municipal Court had to operate without a judge in November 2024, forcing the city to rely on work-arounds to keep the court functioning. The Board later censured Holly and ordered him to pay $2,500 each to two former clients and $500 to a third. Holly applied for reinstatement of his law license on December 23, 2024, and indicated he does not plan to continue practicing law privately.
