Indiana Judge Calvin Hawkins Suspended for Sexually Harassing Court Staff for Nearly Two Decades

Published: February 27, 2025
Calvin D. Hawkins, a Lake Superior Court judge in Hammond, Indiana, was suspended without pay for 30 days by the Indiana Supreme Court after the state's Commission on Judicial Qualifications charged him with judicial misconduct for repeatedly sexually harassing court employees over his 18-year tenure on the bench. The Commission found Hawkins habitually hugged court staff and others at the courthouse between 2007 and 2023, and documented a specific pattern with one staff member: rubbing her shoulder during a 2023 jury trial, later trying to hug and kiss her, making a comment she took as a sexual reference when she knelt down to work on recording equipment, and asking her "shall we have a threesome?" regarding a scheduling matter. The Commission's investigation identified at least four court staff members subjected to the harassment. Under a conditional agreement, Hawkins' suspension ran from March 31 to April 30, he was assessed the costs of the proceeding, and he was ordered to complete sexual harassment training through the National Center for State Courts at his own expense.
