New Hampshire Supreme Court Justice Anna Barbara Hantz Marconi Tried to Get the Governor to Shut Down a Criminal Investigation Into Her Own Husband — She Pleaded Guilty
New Hampshire Public Radio
Published: October 07, 2025
Justice Hantz Marconi was indicted in October 2024 on two felonies and five misdemeanors after prosecutors alleged she used her position to personally lobby Governor Chris Sununu to intervene in a criminal investigation into her own husband, who ran the state's division of ports and harbors. Prosecutors said she arranged a private meeting with Sununu and pushed him to intervene, telling him the investigation was the product of "personal petty and/or political biases" and needed to be "wrapped up quickly" because it was interfering with cases she had to recuse from at the court. In October 2025, under a plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed the felony and most misdemeanor charges, and she pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of criminal solicitation of misuse of position. She was fined $1,200 plus court fees, with no jail time. The Supreme Court lifted her administrative suspension following the plea, but she has not resumed judicial duties because her law license remains separately suspended, and a New Hampshire Judicial Conduct Committee case against her remains open. She turns 70, the state's mandatory judicial retirement age, in February.
