Atlanta Judge Terrinee Gundy Suspended for Chronic Tardiness and Absences — Then for Misleading Investigators About It
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published: August 23, 2022
Terrinee L. Gundy, an Atlanta Municipal Court judge, was suspended for 90 days without pay and publicly reprimanded by the Georgia Supreme Court over a documented pattern of chronic lateness and absenteeism. From September 2015 to February 2018, Gundy repeatedly showed up late to court — including well after she was scheduled to preside over hearings — and was absent a total of 122 days between January 2016 and July 2018. In March 2017, Gundy refused to allow six defendants to be brought to her courtroom from jail, leaving them incarcerated for several days after they should have been released. The Supreme Court's discipline addressed not only the lateness and absences themselves, but also findings that Gundy took steps to conceal the pattern and misled the state's judicial watchdog agency during its investigative review. The Court called the 90-day suspension "among the most serious sanctions we have ever imposed short of removal from office." The Georgia Supreme Court later separately ruled that Gundy did not need to undergo a second public reprimand.
