Arkansas County Judge Gerald Robinson Held in Contempt for Arbitrarily Denying the Sheriff's Office Payment Claims
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Published: May 29, 2026
Gerald Robinson, the Jefferson County Judge in Arkansas, was found in contempt of court by Jefferson Circuit Judge Gary Arnold for treating payment claims from Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr.'s office differently than claims from any other county department, and was fined $6,700 in July 2024. The Arkansas Court of Appeals upheld the contempt finding, ruling that Robinson's denials of payment to the sheriff's office were "arbitrary and capricious." Robinson lost his bid for re-election in the March Democratic primary, receiving only about 25.5% of the vote to his opponent's roughly 74.5%. Six weeks after the contempt finding was upheld on appeal, and days after losing a separate court battle over legal fees, Robinson announced his retirement effective June 30, without giving a reason for his departure.
