Michael Gableman Retired

Michael Gableman, a former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice who led a Republican-commissioned investigation into the 2020 presidential election in Wisconsin, agreed to a three-year suspension of his law license as part of a stipulation with the state's Office of Lawyer Regulation. A special referee found Gableman committed 10 separate lawyer-misconduct violations during that investigation, including making false statements about a judge, an opposing attorney, and two mayors; making false statements to the Office of Lawyer Regulation itself; disobeying a court order; and violating the state's open-records law and confidentiality rules. Gableman and the regulatory office jointly stipulated that a three-year suspension was the appropriate sanction, and the referee's recommendation now goes to the Wisconsin Supreme Court for final approval, with no set timeline for a decision.
