During his 2022 judicial campaign, John Flynn made or approved statements including "Support law enforcement," "Criminals won't be happy to see me on the bench," and a promise to sentence based on criminal history because "Grady's Hotel (aka the jail) is open 24*7 365 days a year." Florida's Judicial Qualifications Commission found these statements violated the judicial canons requiring candidates to act consistently with the impartiality and integrity the office requires. The statements weren't just campaign rhetoric with no real consequence: once Flynn took office, his own chief judge had to make administrative adjustments to ensure Flynn wasn't assigned to hear any criminal cases at all — an acknowledgment that his own pre-judicial statements had compromised his ability to be seen as impartial in exactly the docket he'd have otherwise handled. The Florida Supreme Court found Flynn's statements, "viewed in their totality," constituted "very serious" misconduct — rejecting a first proposed settlement as too lenient (30 days) before ultimately approving a 25-day unpaid suspension and public reprimand.
