Florida Judge Gary Farmer Made Sexually Charged Jokes About Defendants From the Bench — The State Supreme Court Called Him "Unfit to Serve"
Florida Politics
Published: April 10, 2025
Broward County Circuit Judge Gary Farmer, a former Florida Senate Democratic leader, repeatedly made discriminatory, sexually charged, and demeaning remarks from the bench, according to Florida's Judicial Qualifications Commission. In one case, he told a defendant expecting children with three different women to wear a condom while on probation. In others, the JQC cited remarks referencing ejaculation, a suggestion that a defendant would impregnate his own defense attorney, and Farmer reciting homoerotic quotes from a comedy sketch — aimed at attorneys and courtroom observers, not just defendants. Farmer had already been reassigned from the criminal division to civil court after a series of complaints prompted the JQC's investigation in late 2024. The investigative panel found the pattern "pervasive and extensive," concluding it demonstrated Farmer's "unfitness to hold office." The JQC suspended him starting May 19, 2025, and was preparing for a final removal hearing when he resigned instead. Farmer resigned from the bench in August 2025, agreeing as part of his departure to permanently step away from judicial service — never to hold judicial office or serve as a senior judge in Florida again. The JQC subsequently dismissed the pending misconduct charges as moot, since he'd already left the bench for good.
