Matthew J. Elkin Removed

The Indiana Supreme Court permanently banned Howard Superior Court Judge Matthew J. Elkin from judicial service, ordering him to resign to the Governor by September 30, 2025. The Court's September 11, 2025 opinion found Elkin failed to disqualify himself from cases involving parties he had previously represented as an attorney, and made injudicious comments toward participants in his own problem-solving court — a program meant to help people through drug or veterans' treatment rather than straight incarceration. The Court also found Elkin favored certain litigants while degrading others, inadequately supervised his own courthouse employees, and may have misused court funds.
