Edward H. King, a Justice of the New York Supreme Court in Kings County (Brooklyn), resigned effective December 31, 2025, after the State Commission on Judicial Conduct began a proceeding to remove him from the bench. The Commission had been investigating King for allegedly participating in a scheme to defraud investors of escrow funds, and for allegedly practicing law while serving as a sitting judge — conduct not permitted for New York judges. In one federal lawsuit, a real estate investor accused King of acting as an escrow agent on a failed Staten Island property purchase and then refusing to return a $625,000 deposit once the deal fell through. As part of his resignation, King agreed to never serve as a judge again. Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York later alleged that King worked with a Brooklyn real estate investor in "numerous schemes" to defraud investors — receiving funds into his attorney escrow account, pressuring investors to abandon their investments, and refusing to return millions of dollars based on false pretenses. King was subsequently arrested on a federal wire fraud conspiracy charge.
