South Carolina Judge Curtis Clark Reprimanded for Letting His Family Buy $1.6 Million in Foreclosure Properties He Auctioned
The Post and Courier
Published: March 19, 2026
Curtis G. Clark, a former foreclosure judge (special referee) in Greenwood County, South Carolina, was publicly reprimanded by the state Supreme Court after an investigative report exposed that he allowed his wife and children to purchase dozens of properties at foreclosure auctions he personally oversaw. Clark's family spent $1.6 million acquiring the properties, which they later resold for a combined value of $2.2 million — an estimated gross profit of $570,000 or more over roughly two decades.
Following the report, the South Carolina Supreme Court first barred Clark from serving as a special referee in foreclosure matters in 2022, then reached a resolution in March 2026 in which Clark admitted his misconduct and agreed to never again seek judicial duties in the state. The Supreme Court's public reprimand was described as the maximum sanction available given that Clark had already left the bench.
